Today while working out and watching the Bill O'Reilly show I noticed one of the stories that they were highlighting. It got me thinking about people in this country. It made me realize that in times of need people are generally good.
In this story a groom taking his wedding pictures by a river heard some voices screaming. It turns out that a grandfather had fallen in with his small granddaughter. The groom jumped in and rescued the two.
Stories like this happen everyday throughout the United States. Good Samaritans with good hearts put their own lives in danger to rescue others for seemingly no reason; in some cases ending up victims themselves. What makes us do this? Firefighters, Military, and Police run into situations that most people are running away from. The funny thing is that, as a former volunteer firefighter/EMT, you don't even think about your own life when you are doing it. You try your best to be safe but when push comes to shove its all about helping the victim. Fear was never even present for me. What inherent human instinct allows us to disregard our own safety for others?
The only thing I can figure is that people are instinctively communal and in a situation like that we revert back to our basic programming. We do our best to ensure every member of our "tribe" is safe.
